I have racked my brain on how to start my first message . I had my fingers poised over my keyboard for a good 10 minutes . Memories flash through my mind of a once beautiful country . And so I start ....
Freetown , Sierra Leone . Beautiful home of my birth . A country that has been ravaged by war but yet still vibrant in so many ways .
One good memory of Freetown is New Years day .
In the morning you wake up to the sound of people walking by on the road alongside the house shouting ' Happy New Year me no die o ! Tell God tenki for me life o! ' You wake up stretching and smiling . Next comes a waft of baking and cooking , I pad down to the kitchen wishing my Grandma Happy New Year . She's been up cooking and baking since 5am . You see on Christmas day we go over to our Cousins on Regent Road to spend New Year's day . We don't go empty handed. This happens every single year ; ever since before I was born ! The rest of the day is peaceful and quiet ...eating and chatting with my cousins . It's always a lot more fun when cousins who live outside the country are around on holidays. The day is over and we go home ; Gosh school's opening soon , and I never used to look forward to that !
